

This Christmas Eve we had a morning carol service and an evening watch night service. The morning service was full of carols--of the advent nature--as you might imagine. However, instead of having a sermon, we did a 'symbolic action'. Before the service started, a strip of cloth was placed over the back of each chair to be used during the service. Then each person was invited to bring their strip of cloth to the centre of the worship space in order to 'make' a patchwork quilt in a make-shift stable crib to prepare for the birth of Jesus.
This symbolic action originates from the work of the Wild Goose Resource Group and their monthly event called "Holy City". You can read about it in their publication: Cloth for the Cradle.
