This past Friday, April 27, we were blessed by a visit from the World Council of Churches. Both Kathy Galloway, Leader of the Iona Community, and former leader, Norman Shanks, have worked with the World Council of Churches in the past years. Plus, the work of the Iona Community is connected with the WCC.
So, we were grateful to receive Dr Sam Kobiya, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, and two members of his staff--one who is a recent friend of mine named Graham.
A few other members of the Iona Community were there that day for a special worship service led by Kathy. Graham Maule was here from the Resource Group (John was away just then) and he lead the music bits. Others read the scriptures, and I offered the intercessory prayers. Dr. Kobiya gave a reflection about the importance of the written word and thanked the Iona Community for the words they had written (whether in poetry, prose, protest, music, or liturgy) which had been important for him in his journey of ministry.
We had a sandwich lunch and some photos before Dr. Kobiya was whisked away to Edinburgh for his next appointment.
It was a memorable day!
